More recently, Epic have collaborated with Marvel to create a 'Zero War' comic book series, which directly links back to both the game and the Marvel universe.

In the mid 2000's people went to a digital environment called 'second life' where they socials using avatars and it helped facilitate distance of projects
EVE online (2003) allowed users to make money in the real world trading in the virtual world- through a gaming platforms.

Financing personnel (crowd sourcing) & generation of funding (crowd funding)
Crowd sourcing is completing a project by enlisting the services of a large number of people, typically via the internet.
Crowd funding is gathering money from general public to fund a project, as people contribute a relatively small amount, typically via the internet. This allows normal people, not backed by businesses, to be able to gain funds to create new and interesting projects. Thanks to social media, this can be on a world wide platform.
The Long Tail theory is a theory that can be used to describe the way in which new technologies have enabled audiences to have choice over the amount of media they can access. Not just mass/popualr, but niche.
Initially written based on music streaming, it can now be applied to video on demand and streamed media.
Through recommended systems (Web 3.0 or the semantic web) niche products are often promoted.
It can be linked to social media as it enables consumers to access that material quickly.
